چکیده

J. B. Egan and M. L. Morse (Biochim. Biophys. Acta 97:310, 1965) reported a defined medium which would support the growth of Staphylococcus aureus NCTC8511 for several generations if a peptone medium culture was diluted into it. In our hands, cultures of S. aureus NCTC8511 or S. aureus HS1159 (obtained from R. Z. Korman, Department of Physical Biology, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.) maintained on this medium grew very poorly and produced a maximal cell density of only about 0.05 mg (dry weight) per ml. In an attempt to improve the meager growth,

Inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth on tellurite-containing media by Lactobacillus reuteri Is dependent on CyuC and thiol production.

Lactobacillus reuteri inhibits Staphylococcus aureus growth on Baird-Parker agar. This activity required the presence of tellurite and was not shared with other lactic acid bacteria or an L. reuteri mutant defective in cystine metabolism. Secreted products generated from L. reuteri cystine metabolism and thiols were shown to augment tellurite toxicity.

Three different systems participate in L-cystine uptake in Bacillus subtilis.

The symporter YhcL and two ATP binding cassette transporters, YtmJKLMN and YckKJI, were shown to mediate L-cystine uptake in Bacillus subtilis. A triple DeltayhcL DeltaytmJKLMN DeltayckK mutant was unable to grow in the presence of L-cystine and to take up L-cystine. We propose that yhcL, ytmJKLMN, and yckKJI should be renamed tcyP, tcyJKLMN, and tcyABC, respectively. The L-cystine uptake by Yh...

Inactivation of vancomycin-induced unstable L-forms of Staphylococcus aureus by horse serum

Substitution at codon Ser315 of katG gene, a reliable marker for isoniazid (INH) resistance and proliferate in spite of the loss of cell wall is called an L- form. Unstable L- forms  can convert to normal cells but stble L-forms can not.cell wall - deffective state may be induced spontaneously or through the action of an appropriate agent such as antibiotic interfering with the synthesis of cel...

Biosynthesis of ergothioneine from endogenous hercynine in Mycobacterium smegmatis.

Ergothioneine was synthesized and accumulated in growing cultures of Mycobacterium smegmatis when the medium was adequately supplied with sulfur. In a low sulfur medium, the accumulation was sharply limited although growth of the organism was apparently normal. Synthesis of hercynine, the precursor of ergothioneine, was unaffected by low sulfur levels and was markedly increased by addition of l...

The inhibitory effects of Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei isolated from yoghurt on the growth and enterotoxin A gene expression of S. aureus

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal foodborne intoxication is the most common cause of foodborne illnesses by Staphylococcus aureus strains and most are caused by the enterotoxins of S. aureus. Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most frequently responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning outbreaks. From a food safety and human health point of view, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) may provide a promi...
